Positivity Day

I reserved a Wednesday aside for my positivity day and logged the events of my day from the time I woke up. I didn’t have class until 2:50 pm, but I woke up at 7:30 am to start my day with a workout. I didn’t feel that great waking up, but I felt such a sense of accomplishment after I had finished working out. In a podcast I was listening to a couple of months ago, the host talked about applying the 3-foot rule to her everyday life. This means that if someone is within three feet of you, always say hi to them. In most cases, people are just waiting for someone to make the first move. Walking into the gym, I decided that I was going to give this a whirl and said hello to a cute elderly couple heading in to exercise together. I was coming off a high after my workout when I had to call my doctor’s office to ask them a question when I not-so-friendly receptionist tried to kill my vibe. I’m a sensitive person in the sense that I don’t think it’s THAT difficult to be nice, but maybe I’m wrong? I’ll admit that I was a little flustered after my rude encounter with her, but it was positivity day so I had to let it roll off and not affect the rest of my day.

At 10:30 I went to Laws for a meeting with someone in charge of the Digital Innovation program. While I was waiting for her, some Pepsi machine repairmen wandered into the office asking where the vending machines were. I’m poor at describing things, so without hesitation, I jumped up and told them I’d show them. I took them down to the first floor and led them to the vending machines. They joked with me about being their tour guide. This was unintentionally a part of my positivity day, but I’m glad I could’ve at least had a hand in making someone’s day a little easier. During my meeting, I discovered that they may be offering the Digital Innovation program in Luxembourg next fall. This means that I may get the chance to live in Europe for 3 months, a dream of mine! I wanted to keep the positive vibes ~flowing~ so I played ‘Happy Hits’ playlist on Spotify. (This was kind of a big deal for me because I’m infamously known for listening to sad music because sometimes I like to feel sad. I also watch the ending of my favorite movie, Marley and Me to make myself cry sometimes.) While I was listening to ‘Happy Hits’ I got a phone call from my good pal Maddie Z who I went from talking on the phone every day to not seeing for 3 weeks because of school. She stopped by Laws for a couple of hours so we could catch up which was so refreshing! After that, I ran to Farmer because I had scheduled office hours. Office hours were running behind schedule, so I let someone have my hours who needed them more. Lastly, I offered my roommate to borrow my car to go get groceries.

In reality, my positivity day was just a normal day that I intentionally tried to be positive about. What I realized was that these types of things are things that I should do every day. I also learned that staying positive despite the day’s ebb and flows is actually pretty difficult. I think we naturally respond to the environments around us, so when I picked up the vibes around me, but tried not to let them affect me. It’s something that I have to be really intentional with or staying positive at all times isn’t that easy for me.
